As much as possible i'd like to pay my hotel bills by credit or debit card in Manila and the rest of the Phills, but am curious if it's common practice for them to add an extra charge onto your bill for using this payment method ?

We appreciate your understanding to this truly unfortunately fact. Please click on these Agoda links to help Philippines Addicts get credit where it is due, thanks! Book your Philippines Hotel Here and Now! . We have also added Bookings.com as an affiliate and another choice for you guys to get the best possible deal on booking hotel rooms. Again, this costs you nothing. We ask that you please use the Booking.com links found throughout this site so we can get credit for your hotel booking. It's best to try both websites to get the best possible deal. Please use the links provided on this site, thanks!

I've never been charged a service fee for using a credit card for any hotel room in the Philippines but most of the time I use Agoda

Others may have had different experiences but I highly doubt they would be charging extra fees for using your credit cards as people would be complaining about it on Trip Advisor and other places such as this forum. I can't recall ever reading about anybody being charged additional fees for hotel rooms in the Philippines using their credit cards.

One thing to consider is you can get some decent discounts by paying cash for your hotel rooms in the Philippines. Definitely worth asking to see if you can save some extra cash sometimes up to 20%

Yeah, good point, I realize cash is king in the Phills, just thought I could stretch out my travelling cash a little longer by paying hotel bills on my card, save my cash for the BF's !! However as you say reasonable discounts can be had by paying cash.

Sample size: 1

I took about a $100 hit in exchange charges for my credit card over a 2 week stay at ABC hotel in AC.  This had nothing to do with ABC, but was specific to the card that I paid with.

There has been a law on the books for several years now where it is illegal for merchants to charge more for using a credit card than the advertised price.  The work-around for that was for merchants to offer a discount for using cash.  There are services and products that you won't get a discount on, but you should not have any extra charge added for using a card.  Depending on your card, you will might have to pay foreign transaction fees of up to 3% of the transaction.

I agree but let me expand on that a little bit.  You may be charged a fee in the currency conversion at some places.  For example if a hotel advertises 2500 pesos and bills your CC in dollars then the hotels desk or ledger rate they may have the peso at 45 to 1 when it is 46.75 to 1 so for example they may bill you at the lower conversion rate

If you don't pre book through sites such as Agoda you may incur an additional charges that may not have been included such as VAT, service, etc. As for paying for restaurants and other goods/service with a debit/credit card, I prefer Charles Swab debit cards. No international or exchange fees and they pay any fees incurred when taking money out of international ATM's. The fees incurred by other banks/business gets refunded at the end of the month. You should check it out. Don't worry about the brokerage account, you have to create one just to get a checking account but you don't have to use it and I had their service for 2 years with no issues.

Always use the right card for the right kind of transaction. One card with no fees for ATMs to get cash and pay things offline, one card with no fees + airline miles or similar to pay things online but never pay offline directly with your credit card because then you will get additional fees of course.
