Im looking for experience in those last minute seat upgrades that are offered at the airport. I believe this would be the best place for the subject but if a mad wants to move it by all means. My question is this:

1. What airline

2. Route

3. What type of upgrade

4.How much

I think this will be helpful to us who can use the space and accommodations, I mean we are not getting any younger!

Personal experience is from LAX to HNL I was on delta and was able to wait until 30 mins to boarding. I was able to pull a first class for $55. As soon as I checked in I went to the counter to see what was available. They took my name and told me how much it would be if they were still open. They called my name and I paid easy as pie.

I don't have any experience about fly to the Philippines but I have done at least one or two trans Pacific trip a year in the last 10+ year. I don't think you could get such good deal on international flights.

Years ago, my pay grade was only allowed me to fly on econ. Once, I was going from SFO to HKG on CX. At check in, I asked how much I had to pay to get upgrade to business. The answer was USD 1000. I paid and got my upgrade.

I always fly out from SFO or LAX. I only used JAL, Cathay Pacific, Korean Air, ANA and Singapore Airlines. Some of routes are more popular than the others. For examples, SFO to HKG on Cathay and Singapore Airlines, they are always full and something the airlines oversold their econ class. I have seen Cathay and Singapore offer a few hundred USD for the oversold passengers to switch to the next day's flight. I have seen young kids jumping up and down because they got free upgrade to business class. But I haven't heard you could pay a deep discount price to get upgarded. If other BMs know any deals like that, I like to know too.

Typically on international flights if there are open seats in business and Economy is full they will bump you up if you are a member of their miles program for example star alliance and they do it based upon status for example a gold would go before silver, platinum before gold and there will be no charge. On domestic flights it works the same but economy doesn't have to be full.
As a matter of fact I literally just landed in Trinidad and was bumped up to business. I fly international every month and probably get upgraded half the time.

I am only silver member of Star Alliance. I have never got free upgrade on ANA, Thai, and EVA. I saw young kids got free upgrade. They might be Platinum/Gold members. Or some airlines do the free upgrade randomly?

My experience is most the time you can pay a small fee last minute to get an upgrade. I'm just seeing if anyone else does this too and if they have any input. I know about the clubs and cards and points.

No that doesn't happen on international for a small fee.  And upgrades are not random they are based on your level in that program.  Gold never gets before Plat ect.  active military sometimes get with no status however

Silver has virtually no chance there's bound to be a gold higher on the flight. I've gotten upgrades from EVA and Asiana the 2 airlines I use most often. If you are a frequent flyer it is definitely an advantage to be a gold member (in star alliance affiliated airlines).

Economy in most airlines is not a one class ticket. Three are around 6 different classes in economy, from the cheapest fair to the higher fair. The difference between the lowest class in economy and the higher class in economy in long international flights can be almost 1,000$. According to the economy class of your ticket is the price that you will be asked to pay for upgrade and the chances that you will be upgraded, either by money or by milage.

I do remember getting offers of upgrades it seem to be much cheaper than booking in the first place, but I decline the offers each time. Some upgrades best I remember were econmy to econmy plus and some to bussiness class/1st class.

I don't remember exact details but I do remember declining them.

They certainly do not give "free" upgrades by ignoring elite members who pay them $25,000 a year for one who has paid then $1,000 in his whole life.

I really think that depends on the airlines. Let's use Star Alliance as example. I don't think United treat their elite members better thanThai Airways treat the passenger who only paid $1000 in his whole life.

On the other hand, different airlines have difference policy in upgrade members. For example, Thai Aiways and EVA are very differenet:

http://www.thaiairwa...inum_Status.htm

http://www.evaair.co...and-privileges/

Let's say, if you want to redeem a Hong Kong to Bangkok one way business ticket, it will cost you 38500 miles on Thai Airways:

http://www.thaiairwa...wards-chart.htm

You use your Eva miles to redeem the same ticket in Thai Airways, you only need 35000 miles:

http://www.evaair.co...tcm35-16932.pdf

I have seen young kinds got upgrade to business without any reason only because the econ class was oversold.

I am silver  have gotten a few upgrades between Manila and Tokyo. I once got a upgrade between Tokyo and US that was sweet,  when I paid for the flight with miles.

I could not get the flight for the lowest milage total which at the time was 60,000 miles. I payed over 100,000, maybe that was a determining factor.

The majority of my flights with star alliance are with using miles. I do use alot of partners like credit cards and other things to gain those miles. Maybe that's a difference maker.

I never ask for any of the upgrades, they called my name at the gate and I went to the desk and recieved the new ticket with upgrade.

Yes I never ask for them either but on domestic flights I am automatically placed on the upgrade list and on international flights you will not be upgraded for free unless economy is full. If you do want to ask for an upgrade the best place is at the gate a few minutes before boarding starts.

AT EK, asking is free.. Will not help a lot if you have no status though

Status is all , BUT

In the past they had a policy on also upgrading NEW Skywards members, when I joined EK skywards in 2001 or so, we were upgraded on one leg without having really a status. Might have been we came quite late to the gate ( group of 4)

What works VERY well is get to gate as late as you can, works very well if you have status and fly Business. if the plane  eco is full the will fill up business with the eco pass and you will be in first as these are never full.

I know that Philippine Air does not offer much. My last trip from Honolulu to Manila the Biz section was

empty and I wanted to upgrade. They said $800 US one way and would not budge.

Not sure about upgrade from Economy to Business, but PAL has a program where passengers can upgrade to a bulkhead or exit row for $50 (OW) and to a forward section in Economy for $20 (OW)
