Martial Law, stopped me in my tracks last night,, travelling between Mati, and Davao , at 9pm stopped at a road side Army inspection setup, everybody off the bus, walk through the inspection area then back on the bus, only to get stuck behind a military convoy,,

@  willie50 : (24 May 2017 - 05:41 AM)

martial law has not affected san Francisco and prosperidad on Mindanao at this moment. usually a lot of soldiers n check points

@FurryFriend So you have experienced Martial law have you? Well I have and I tell you it is slightly inconvenient but not to the stage you wouldn't go there. FFS you love a troll or two don't you.

@  FurryFriend : (23 May 2017 - 11:48 PM)

http://www.rappler.com/nation/170754-davao-city-lockdown-marawi-attack Davao City mayor "urged visitors to cancel their trips to Davao unless [its] very important...[and] said that if they don't want to be thoroughly inspected in multiple checkpoints, they should not come..." That doesn't sound like a rocking fun place for a week-long mongering trip.

@  FurryFriend : (23 May 2017 - 11:20 PM)

Martial law means so much more than a curfew. It's about having mobility restricted, roads closed, stores closed, flights cancelled, and possible loss of conveniences like cellphone, ATM or internet services. These are all hinderences to mongering. If there was martial law in Pampanga, you can bet AC bars will all be closed. Furthermore, martial law grants the military ability to perform civilian law enforcement. It will not be a fun moment in the Philippines when soldiers with very powerful weapons stops you, asks you questions, then demands to frisk you.

Stay on the main strip, keep reading the board for tips, enjoy the bars everybody buys a few too many lady drinks to begin with its culture shock n just plain old having fun.
Read up about keeping your shit safe, the bar areas both in Subic and ac are generally safe if you don't do stupid shit.
Try not to get too rat faced drunk and the usual advice about not falling in love etc etc. Don't wife up on a first trip it takes a lot of discipline to walk away when the time comes, if you haven't already make a fake fb account to keep this life and work n family life separate.
Good luck have a good time.

Yes, I behave well these days. :)

I've been to Pattaya 20+ times since 1994.

Love the dames, but don't take one home every night now.

One a *cough* more boring, note, I wonder if any short sleeve button down shirts can be bought in the area. :)

I have to be honest, you are starting to confuse me, looking at maps I cannot see a lot of difference between the distance of Waterfront and Mangrove to the "action area" compared to Arizona and as long as the room is clean, the shower and toilet work, I am only using it to sleep and "shag". I repeat this is 3 days as a "taster" for Subic with 3 days in AC. I am no novice to mongering in SEA and consider myself a bit of a veteran in LOS.

What the map doesn't show is that from the Waterfront to Barretto you'll need to negotiate a steep winding road, without much of a footpath. If you use Google Map you can use the street view feature to get an idea of what I mean.

Barretto or Baloy Beach are a better choice IMHO.

I have now changed my booking to Mangos, I believe that is pretty well in the "action area". If it is not I will live with it for 3 nights as I am almost going off the idea of Subic and PI in general, last time I was put off trying PI was in 2008 when it got blasted by the weather.

Subic Waterfront is not on SBMA, it's just a little bit further than the the turn off to Baloy Beach, still on the National Highway.

Coming out of the Waterfront's driveway turn right to go to Baloy, then barretto, but you can call for a trike before you even walk to the highway.   http://www.acmap.com....aspx?mapID=bb2

I have another trip planned to AC next month but have never been to Subic.  I now have 3 days planned for Subic.  Is there a hotel recommendation cost not a factor, near the action, quiet location, in Subic?

thank you.

One big decision criteria is whether or not you want to stay on the beach or downtown. The nightlife is less than 1KM from Treasure Island, so distance is not a factor. It takes 20 minutes to walk or 5 minutes by trike. If you want the beach with a terrific pool, consider Treasure Island. If you want a top quality room, consider Mangrove. If you want to stay downtown, There's Mango's, iCove and, of course, Paradise (the Maze). At the top end, price wise, is Mangrove (around P4K/night) and at the bottom end is Paradise (around P1,900 for a mini suite).

Thank you very much.  I live in Pattaya.  I like it here and just started going to Philippines.  I think the Phils is better for my lifestyle and I want to see more. The biggest factor is the English because Thai girls cannot speak.  Plus, people in general seem more polite and genuine and I think the girls younger and prettier.  But I know that is a personal choice..  Anyway, I booked Mangrove so thanks.

Mangrove is a good choice. Quiet location, but close to the action. Harleys next door is good for live premiership football games (if you like that sort of thing ).
You can walk from Mangrove to Arizona (other end of the strip) in less than 20 minutes, to the maze around 10 minutes or just grab a trike for 50php.

It's where I stay

Hello, there are some great posts on here about Subic hotels, thanks for the useful info.  I've stayed at the Arizona before, I found it to be good overall - friendly, well priced with a good location, I had one of the slightly bigger rooms which was great, very small pool but I swam in the sea.  This time (around May 15) I would like to try somewhere different though and am considering Mangrove. From the website their guest policies sound strict - does anyone know how guest friendly Mangrove is and is it possible to take two ladies back? I wouldn't mind an extra joiner fee for the second, but would like the option! I will email them now to ask too, but would appreciate anyone's experience.

Thank you, that is good to know.  I will see if anyone knows about two ladies, I realise it is a little greedy:) I will reply with what I hear back from the hotel too. I am considering Treasure Island too, but I am guessing 2 ladies isn't a problem there.

Staying at the Arizona right now. I have no complaints about the room, service or dinning. I plan on staying here next year if this helps. I attached a capture from their transport flyer.bdda7a43739a34c883535e59fb2b0190.jpg

The food is good at Arizona, I'm not a fan of build your own breakfasts (as the cost can build, on what should be a cheap meal) but cc's kitchen is out at the moment so their fixed price bfast (which is super value at 99peso) is off.
Arizona do a varied and wide ranging menu, if you can't find something you like on there, then god help you.
I'm going to give this hotel a try next time, it looks very well run.

The Pub, 1300 and up, (1000 if you stay longer) basic room, large bathroom though.

On Baloy Beach many for 1000 and up. I liked Sweetcorn, just opened, again basic, a diy style place, but with fridge, coffee maker, etc.

If you need higher end and more services then you should look at the bigger names around the area. Wild Orchid, Mangrove, etc. Mangrove had a non-beach facing room for 1800 last time I checked there.

Never stay at the Pub . It is the worst deal ever . Right across street is twice as good of deals. I finally got out of that rip off  joint and transferred to Dennito up the road a bit toward cheap charlies but not quite that far. Turn on the same road as the Maze set of bars. It was only around a year old when i stayed there December 2016. Address No. 9 Del Pilar St., Barretto. Only one inconvenience they did not take credit cards when i was there but the price was php1600 at the time. They also had monthly deals for different rooms at different price. Don't what the deal is now.

So I mention a place that has the price at 1000-1300 and that place is a rip-off, but your place at 1600 is just fine? Own stock in Dennito? JK, but really I don't get your point.

While the place directly across from the Pub, which was called Calypso, did have signs out advertising rooms at 600 and 750 per night, it looked sort of dilapidated, or like a Filipino level accommodation place, to me.

Just a quick update from me on my 2 lady query as promised. Mangrove don't show an email address on their website but only have one of those online form things. I filled it out a week ago and again a few days ago but never got a response. It did give errors 2nd time until I removed apostrophes. Best to get hold of them by phone I guess but think I will go for Teasure Island even tho it's a bit further along. I'm now in Angeles so time is running out! :-)

I doubt it would be a problem so long as the room type you booked is for 2/3 guests. If it's just for 2 then they might get fun.
Lot of Families stay at Mangrove, so they might just be ignoring you?
Treasure Island isn't that much further and I would guess a little cheap, on a big beach and close to the floating bars.
You can call Mangrove, or chance it and just rock up and ask before you check-in. If the answers no carry on down to TI.
Or, just go to TI!
