Tonight Billguy and myself ventured out to locate the best Cheeseburger in all of Angeles City and IMOP we have found it. A little place in the side yard of a house in Angeles City proper in the Nepo Subdivision. Burger Shack is the name and burgers are there game. Open very limited hours, 6-10pm weekdays and 6-midnight weekends. First restaurant in the Philippines that after the meal I was given a comment card to fill out. Its hard to explain just how juicy the burgers are and size, awesome comes to mind. Pics attached and FB page. You have to give it a try.

Yep. The aptly named "Y.O.L.O." Burger may just be that - the very last time you eat something with so much fat.

1/2 kg of fatty beef, triple cheese, bacon - AND even a German sausage (presumably containing pork). I couldn't even count the amount of fat and cholesterol in it! I'd call it the Cardiologist Delight - guaranteed to bring on a heart attack.

No doubt however it tastes superb!

Friday's (Marquee Mall) has the best I've had so far, but I'll try Burger Shack out tomorrow. It would be surprising for the burger to be better than Friday's since Friday's beef is imported from America, and I'm assuming the Burger Shack uses local beef.

Are you sure TGIF beef is all imported from America? It's doesn't say that on the menu.

A lot of lies are told about meat sold here. For example, many restaurants will claim to be selling USDA Certified Angus Beef, when it's not Angus steak at all, and not certified by anybody. They just use those words and hope nobody really knows what it means.

I very seriously doubt that this Fridays uses imported beef from the US or the pricing would be much higher, even for a chain.

One option is that it comes from Guam, purchased at the base commissary, and is shipped over. That would be the cheapest way to get US beef over, and it would be an abuse of the commissary system. Incidentally, its cheaper to get beef in Guam from Australia and NZ via the PI than it is to get it from the US mainland the non-commissary route, for reasons I won't go in to. So basically they could be bringing in beef from Guam that was brought in from australia, and they could still legally say it was imported from the US.

The US has a whole horde of USDA people teaching the PI the correct way to fuck up their agronomy, so the beef may actually be "USDA approved" or inspected, but I simply find it hard to believe the beef comes from the states.

I'll look into it, though, I may be surprised

Okay, I take it back

I just looked at the TGIF PI menu.

That may very well be imported from the US via air. That shit is literally almost twice the price as the one down the street from me.

The TGIF franchise in the Philippines is owned by the Bistro Group, who operate a chain of dozens of restaurants here. They probably get through enough beef between them to require a more reliable supply than bringing it in from the base commissary in Guam. A lot of imported beef in the Philippines comes from Australia. For a burger, I think they're more likely to use locally produced beef rather than imported.

On the USDA thing, Angus beef originated from Angus, in Scotland. Angus beef sold in the USA comes from cattle who are certified by the US Department of Agriculture as having ancestry traceable back to the original Aberdeen Angus herd. If the beef has not been certified as such then it can't be called "USDA Certified Angus". Since there are no Angus cattle herds in the Philippines any local meat that claims to be "USDA Certified Angus" is just a lie.

From Balibago coming you would turn right at McArthur, and then keep going straight, past Robinson, over the Bridge, straight at the Rotonda follow Henson.
Pass Rabbit Bus Terminal, Metro Bank, Fire Station until you turn right into Sampaguiata Street.

Or follow Friendship Hiway, turn right at Cut-Cut crossing (Jollibee, some gas stations) and follow that road and turn left into Sampaguita.

I didn't go into the kitchen to check the delivery boxes or anything, but the waitress said it was imported from Hawaii. TGIF is a huge company so I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt. For me, the taste, more than anything else, proves it's imported.

Maybe, but the local branches of TGIF in the Philippines are not the same company as the ones in the US. It's just a franchise operation operated by a local company here.

After all this talk about burgers I thought I’d drop into TGIF in Robinsons Place Manila tonight and try one. I asked the barman where the beef for the burgers came from and he said "from Australia, the same for all our steaks".

I really doubt that TGIF in Angeles get them from Hawaii while the branch in Manila get them from Australia. It seems they just tell the customers whatever they think they want to hear.

You really can't believe anything these people tell you. It's anyone's guess what the truth really is.

But don't get the impression you'll be following some simple wide open highway, it is crowded and chaotic most all the way. When you see a big cemetery on the right, your turn is next. ( I mean you turn right, not you die)

A nice find but I go by the taste of burgers like others have said. American beef is the best. Even the Assie hamburger meat to me I buy, tastes off. This place is in the heart of a Filipino area with virtually no foreigners. It has limited hours. I can't imagine this beef being very good. I say it looks better in pics than it tastes Hell, a Jollibee Champ Burger looks great in the pics. Have you ever tasted one? Yuck! after reading many good reviews in Angeles on places that are average or bad I believe very little.
