Well, it takes The Jacksons to bring some quality to the stage at Glastonbury (biggest pop festival in the world), following all of the mediocre whinings of previous performers.

I was first there in '93 and it was pretty much a ghost town by then, maybe a half dozen bars running. I stayed at the Marmont hotel, what a flea pit. The barrio was really cheap compared to Angeles, and I had a great time partying around the bars.

I was there in 89' and again in 90' .
I remember the Abracadabra, the Super Head inn and Rock lobster.
It was dicey going to Barrio Barreto and Subic City back then. Not meaning security wise , just everything was run down. The only reason me and my buddies went there was to get away from the thousands of Marines and sailors in Olongapo.

By that time, they didn't do " Peso Shows " or the " smiles " game anymore, but I did get a few " Free Sample " Bj's. :)

Judging by the pics on this site, the area seems to be pretty nice now.

I visited many times form 1983-1985 onboard USS White Plains. Fafa Popes was the hangout for engineering, so that is where I spent most of my time. I really miss the old days.

In '85, the Marmont was the only good hotel in Baretto, they did have a section for Navy short-timers, but they also had good long-term rentals, including a few studio apartments, a decent restraunt and pool. Admittedly, that was before Pinatubo made an ash of itself.

As for bars, the first one I hit was the Irish Rose (It was just down the National Highway from the Marmont), and it was generally a quiet retired Chief's hangout. I looked in on several of the others the first night, including the one that had the girls' boxing matches but don't remember any names now. Most had a young, noisy crowd, including one that had some submariners getting their Dophins pinned on. Went back to the Rose and tried to bar-fine a girl who seemed to be having a lot of fun. She informed me that she was having a party to say goodbye to her steady boyfriend, who had just been transferred to ship duty on an LST. Went back the next night and L-T'ed her; used her to help me find an apartment, and then moved her furniture into it.

Not true. I was there in 90/91 and saw a few Peso shows (one really cute half/Irish/Pinoy with redish brown hair and
beautiful pink nipple tits....also took a group of old guys down to Marylans (spelling?) which if I remember was one of
the first bars on the left as you entered Subic City.

As for run down? It was always run down. My first visit was 79 back when Marcos was in power. Curfew at midnight.
Good times though. Remember Genesis Club and also Iron Butterfly2. Great bars for different reasons.

I was there '87 and in '89. Bamboo was engineering's hang out to get away from the crowds in Subic.

As a battlewagon sailor, when we pulled in to Cubi Point, it felt like we were way out in the boondocks.

I had a friend from BT A School on the Sterett (CG-31) who was home ported there in Subic. My friend knew all the local spots to get away from the crowds. Good times back then, miss the old days.

Olongapo City is the largest community and located right next to SBMA.
Barrio Barretto is the next community as you head north along the National Highway, a few kilpmeters up the road.
Subic City, or Calapandayan is even farther north up the highway.

We used to rank them by seediness and quality of girls.

Olongapo had the bigger clubs and the girls were typically better looking. $$$$
Barrio Barretto was quieter and had more of a home town feeling. Allot of "station dito" lived in the Barrio Barretto area. Alot of good bars to drink in. $$$
Subic City was just plain raunchy, girl were not so much to look at but they were alot of fun. $

SUBICBOY: for only having 7 posts you sure know what your talking about,
you must have been there and done that, after all the years I did in PI I couldn't
have said it better, of the three Subic City, or Calapandayan was my place to go
I spend many afternoons and nights there, we called it the training grounds for
the girls that ended up in Barrio Barretto or Olongapo City and we tryed to teach
them right.

I enjoyed Midnight Rambler back then, when it was on the other side of the road. It's still a great place but back then those ST rooms were basically closets with a tiny bed....but it got the job done. Subic City was a great place to go anytime of the day. many of the bars were lower than the road so they would flood during rainy season, but that didn't stop the girls from working in them.

What I wouldn't give to go back in that era for two weeks. Seems cleaner, more laid back and generally carefree. Almost dreading my next trip to the Philippines. I'm sure Subic will be fine but Angeles is so discouraging. Anyways great article and posts. Hopefully the good ole' days will be back again.....

Snake ignore those doomsday spreaders. I was in Ac/Subic last week and am there most months. Situation fairly normal but much less customers. Just be discrete when taking a girl and you will be fine. Some people are panicking and acting like bitches. Just get out there and rape and pillage...

Oh by the way GREAT pictures. Cant believe thats subic. What the fuck happened.??? Dont get me wrong I love Subic but it looks so much better then...
